Happy New Year!

For My Fellow Piggies:

If you were born in 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983 or 1995 - you were born under the sign of the pig. Like the pig, you are highly regarded for your chilvary and pureness of heart, and you often make friends for life. For pigs in 2007, any recent setbacks or obstacles can be overcome so look forward to a year in which to really shine, either personally or professionally.

May the year ahead bring everyone lots of health, some wealth and a world of peace & happiness!

Unconditional Love

Back to the subject? Well, not really…unconditional love, I think, can only be provided from parent to child and if the parent is lucky it is reciprocated. Countless arguments, tons of shouting matches, purposely getting on each other’s nerves and yet, our parents love us despite all of our faults, coming late at night or early in the morning, our relationship choices, career goals, in short, all of our imperfections.

Why are we then, so quick to yell? To shout? And to complain? Maybe it comes with the territory, it’s all part of growing up. Maybe most of us don’t realize these things until we have kids of our own.

More thoughts to come...

Monologue for Today's Times

"Appearances are not held to be a clue to the truth. But we seem to have no other." -Ivy Compton-Burnett

“For the great majority of mankind are satisfied with appearance, as though they were realities and are often more influenced by the things that seem than by those that are” -Niccolo Machiavelli

Another interesting conversation was sparked last night – are we really what we seem?

We’ve always been told to “never judge a book by its cover,” but of course we all judge. Outward appearances, manners and language result in preconceived notions, but rarely if ever do they show who we really are. We must dig deeper, get to know the person until we can really “judge” what they are all about. However, we are all too busy and too concerned with our own image to take the time to get to know somebody. Seldom do we meet people that intrigue us, which we find interesting, that we want to know more about. Sometimes we realize that they are not really worth knowing and sometimes we end up with the best of friends.

Having “bitch” written on your forehead doesn’t mean that you’re not the most kind and dear friend that anyone can ask for. It simply means that certain people won’t approach you because they are scared and certain will because they think they can “break” you. Having an all knowing personality and acting like a tough shot doesn’t mean that you’re a careless, selfish person. It may mean just the opposite – that you’re a fragile human being that puts up a front so that nobody can come near you. We all have an image of ourselves and it may not necessarily be the same view that we portray to others. All of us fall within a certain stereotype and while stereotypes don’t come about for no reason, it is rare that we fit the description perfectly.

Being blonde, doesn’t make you dumb anymore than going to college makes you smart. Being opinionated doesn’t mean that you’re always right anymore than being quiet or shy mean that you have nothing to say. Being beautiful/handsome doesn’t make you a good person any more than being unattractive makes you uninteresting. I could go on, but I think that you get the gist of where I am going, then why is it so important to us to look good? Why is it important to wear the hottest, best fitting jeans? To get a haircut? To clean our nails? To say the right things to the right people? To smile?

I think I learned the answer to these questions in sixth grade when a classmate said to me, “because you don’t come up to a person across a crowded room and say ‘wow great personality.’” Before we come to each other, before we hit it off, initially there must be something that has to attract us to that person. Stereotypes will not be broken, each of us will remain with our predisposed views of each other and we will all judge. However, we must remember that sometimes even the dullest looking book is a worthwhile read.

Why We're All So Tired

For a couple years I've been blaming it on iron poor blood, lack of vitamins, dieting and a dozen other maladies. But now I found out the real reason.

I'm tired because I'm overworked.

The population of this country is 237 million. 104 million are retired. That leaves 133 million to do the work.

There are 85 million in school, which leave 48 million to do the work. Of this there are 29 million employed by the federal government. This leaves 19 million to do the work.

Four million are in the Armed Forces, which leaves 15 million to do the work.

Take from the total the 14,800,000 people who work for State and City Government and that leaves 200,000 to do the work. There are 188,000 in hospitals, so that leaves 12,000 to do the work.

Now, there are 11,998 people in prisons. That leaves just two people to do the work.

You and me.

And you're sitting there reading jokes on the web.

"True friendship consists not in the multitude of friends, but in their worth and value." - Ben Jonson

To my dearest friends...

According the Merriam Webster dictionary, Friendship is defined as "one attached to another by affection or esteem" and perhaps it's as simple that. However, what constitutes our friendships? Is it the length of time that we have known each other? Is it the hardships that we overcame together? Is it the laughter that we shared? Is it the mindless conversations? Is it the comfort?

I think that friendship should never me measured, but if it must, the result should be qualitative and not quantitative. We become friends for different reasons. Perhaps, it's because we weren't part of the "cool" crowd, or because someone turned around in Russian class and simply said "Hi, My name is Lily," or because we missed a mutual friend that we became friends, or because you called me when I really didn't wan't to have any human contact, or because we just "clicked." Whatever the reasons for us becoming friends, what kept us friends?

Common interests - not always. Non-stop gabfests - sometimes. Constantly being there for each other - impossible. Yet, there is something that drew us in and kept us there. Each friendship different, yet soothing.

The friend who can be silent with us in a moment of despair or confusion, who can stay with us in an hour of grief and bereavement, who can tolerate not knowing, not curing, not healing and face with us the reality of our powerlessness, that is a friend who cares." -Henri Nowen

“Love is the irresistible desire to be irresistibly desired.” -Robert Frost

After one too many drinks or perhaps not enough, an interesting conversation arose last night - What is Love?

While I am no expert and cannot answer a question that's been asked since beginning of time, there are a few factors to ponder:

1. Is true love always tragic?
2. Does true love really exist (outside of plays, novels, movies & other pop culture mediums)?
3. Does every person experince love during their lifetime?
4. Is your first love the strongest?

More thoughts to come...for now an interesting piece of reading...

Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn't it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up these defenses, you build this whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life. You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They do something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own any more. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. not just in the mind. It's a soul hurt, a body hurt, a real gets inside you and rips you apart pain. I hate love. - Neil Gaiman

We Survived

Many a time all of us look back to our childhood and think about how different things were. The things that we considered luxuries as kids are nothing to the kids growing up today. Somehow we survived without video games, cable tv and ulimited amounts of fast food and candy. It's hard to fathom that we were actually social. Whether sledding or playing house, going to school or berry picking we were always outside, active and surrounded by our peers.

The following is a very interesting article of how things really were and how they are now. Enjoy!

Where is the Happiness?

BEING TWENTY … SOMETHING (Read The Whole Thing...It's Worth it.)
They call it the "Quarter-life Crisis." It is when you stop going along with the crowd and start realizing that there are many things about yourself that you didn't know and may not like. You start feeling insecure and wonder where you will be in a year or two, but then get scared because you barely know where you are now.
You start realizing that people are selfish and that, maybe, those friends that you thought you were soclose to aren't exactly the greatest people you have ever met, and the people you have lost touch with aresome of the most important ones. What you don't recognize is that they are realizing that too, and aren't really cold, catty, mean or insincere, but that they are as confused as you.
You look at your job... and it is not even close to what you thought you would be doing, or maybe you are looking for a job and realizing that you are going to have to start at the bottom and that scares you.
Your opinions have gotten stronger. You see what others are doing and find yourself judging more thanusual because suddenly you realize that you have certain boundaries in your life and are constantlyadding things to your list of what is acceptable and what isn't. One minute, you are insecure and then thenext, secure. You laugh and cry with the greatest force of your life. You feel alone and scared andconfused. Suddenly, change is the enemy and you try and cling on to the past with dear life, but soonrealize that the past is drifting further and further away, and there is nothing to do but stay where youare or move forward.
You get your heart broken and wonder how someone you loved could do such damage to you. Or you lie in bed and wonder why you can't meet anyone decent enough that you want to get to know better. Or maybe you love someone but love someone else too and cannot figure out why you are doing this because you know that you aren't a bad person. One night stands and random hook ups start to look cheap. Getting wasted and acting like an idiot starts to look pathetic.
You go through the same emotions and questions over and over, and talk with your friends about the sametopics because you cannot seem to make a decision. You worry about loans, money, the future and making a life for yourself... and while winning the race would be great, right now you'd just like to be a contender!
What you may not realize is that everyone reading this relates to it. We are in our best of times and our worst of times, trying as hard as we can to figure this whole thing out.

The Mayonnaise Jar AND COFFEE

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hoursin a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar...and the coffee...A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items infront of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a verylarge andempty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He thenasked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them intothe jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the openareas between the golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar wasfull. They agreed that it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else in the jar. He asked oncemore if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous "yes."
The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table andpoured the entire contents into the jar, effectively filling the emptyspace between the sand. The students laughed.
"Now," said the professor, as the laughter subsided, I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things - your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions - things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else - the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. "One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffeere presented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked. It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always roomfor a couple of cups of coffee with a friend.
My dearest friends, thanks for all the cups of coffee that we have shared.
